STEVEN ROST

Professor and Artist

Steven Rost is a professor, practicing artist, and former Chair of the Department Art and Design in the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University. Prior to his career in design education, his experience is quite diverse.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a major in Marketing Research from the University of Denver. Upon graduating, his initial career was Sales Engineer for a large equipment manufacturer working with shipbuilding facilities, nuclear power plants, and petrochemical refineries. After becoming dissatisfied with this direction, he left that position and began his BFA studies in graphic design, film, and photography at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Following his experience at MCAD he chose Cranbrook Academy of Art to study photography and design. In 1982, he earned his MFA in Photography.

After starting as a member of the adjunct faculty at Lawrence Tech, he advanced through the ranks to become a full professor and Director of Fine Arts. At LTU, he has been responsible for creating three new degree programs, and for coordinating successful NASAD and CIDA accreditation visits. He also served two separate stints as interim Artist-in-Residence for Carl Toth in Cranbrook’ Academy of Art's photography department. Rost is co-author of a book with Harold Linton, entitled “Marketing for Architects and Designers,” and he also contributed to Linton’s book entitled “Portfolio Design."
